Manzil is the best cure for black magic and all kinds of evil effects. This dua is so powerful for removing every kind of sickness, Alhamdulillah.

5 things you should know about the “Evil Eye” (and how to protect yourself).

Do you believe in the “Evil Eye”? Many cultures around the world still do today (so maybe you should!). It’s a particularly widespread belief in the Mediterranean region, as reflected by the abundance of amulets on offer to protect yourself from it. For example in Italy, where it’s called “malocchio”, the red cornicello is the most popular anti-Evil Eye charm. Whereas in Cyprus, Greece and Turkey, you’ll find a blue eye-like symbol on jewellery and decorations everywhere, endowed with the same protective powers.

So, what is the Evil Eye?

The Evil Eye is a folk concept that the hostile glance of certain people, gods, animals or mythological figures (depending on the culture) can result in injury, illness or even death. Usually, the victim is unaware of it happening to them and only in hindsight is said “to have received the Evil Eye”. Therefore, the best means of protection is to wear charms that will divert the evil gaze in the first place.

Want to know more? Let’s dig a little deeper with 5 Things you should know about one of the world’s oldest superstitions…

1. The Evil Eye can be traced back to the ancient Mediterranean, over 5,000 years ago!

The earliest surviving evidence of this belief comes from ancient Mesopotamia (modern southeast Turkey/Syria/Iraq) in the form of incantations, eye-shaped amulets and references to the dangerous glance of the gods in Sumerian literature¹. In ancient Egypt, this concept may have merged with that of the Eye of Horus, which sailors would paint on their ships to ensure safe travel².

However it is with the ancient Greeks, that the conventional expression for “Evil Eye” (or baskania in Greek) first appears in a fragment from the 5th Century BC: “the dead hare casts an Evil Eye upon me” (Pherecrates, Frag. 189). The concept itself is referred to in over 100 ancient Greek texts, including the works of Hesiod, Plato and Aristophanes!³

2. The Evil Eye can be cast accidentally or on purpose.

Some cultures believe that the Evil Eye can be cast accidentally (e.g. by a dead animal, as above). This belief might have contributed to the ancient and modern custom of closing the eyes of the dead. But when it is intentional, it is often considered to be caused by envy and therefore the envious gaze from a hostile person or god.

It is a common theme in Greek and Roman mythology that prosperous individuals are brought down by the envy of the gods. In a particularly ironic moment from Greek tragedy, for example, Aeschylus’ Agamemnon seals his own destruction by treading on some sacred tapestries, saying: “may no envious glance cast me down from afar” (Agam. 946–947).

3. Compliments and praise can attract the Evil Eye.

If you’re happy, successful, talented or beautiful enough to stand out from the crowd, you’re more at risk from the Evil Eye! This is because you might attract lavish (or worse, loud) praise and therefore, envy. In one of Plato’s dialogues, Socrates counters the praise he has just received for his skilful argumentation: “My friend,” he says, “do not speak loudly, lest some Evil Eye (baskania) put to rout the argument that is to come.” (Phaedo, 95b).

In modern Romania and Palestine, it is still unlucky to say “What a beautiful child!” and they have methods in place to reverse the effects of Evil Eye caused by the person who uttered such a phrase. In medieval Italy, there existed a safeguarding wish “may these words not hurt you” to accompany any compliment⁴ given and similar customs exist in Islamic societies today.

4. A “nazar” is the proper name for a typical eye-shaped Evil Eye amulet.

The iconic blue-eye glass amulets from the Mediterranean are often confusingly referred to as “evil eyes” themselves. In the English dictionary, a “nazar” is the proper name for such amulets, deriving from the Arabic for sight and surveillance, but still meaning look, gaze or evil eye in Turkish. It might seem strange to use the Evil Eye as an anti-Evil Eye amulet — as though there is a kind of supernatural checkmate at play. But it likely stems from the homeopathic principle that “like repels like”⁵ or the ancient Mesopotamian law of “an eye for an eye”.

5. The legendary Basilisk (think Harry Potter) is the Evil Eye in animal form.

The ancient Greek expression for Evil Eye (baskania) helps explain the etymology behind this creature’s name. According to Pliny the Elder, the Basilisk of Cyrene was an incredibly small and yet venomous snake that could cause death with a single glance.⁶ In the Harry Potter series, a female basilisk inhabits the Chamber of Secrets below Hogwarts — even looking at its reflection “petrifies” several students and (spoiler alert) killed the famous Moaning Myrtle!

How to Protect Yourself From the Evil Eye

It is real and you need to know about  it, because it can greatly affect both your physical and spiritual productivity. What is it? It is the evil eye.

In this week’s central ayah Allah says: And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the message, and they say, ‘Indeed, he is mad.’ [Quran,68:51]

So the evil eye is real? Yes! The  Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:  The evil eye is real, and if anything were to overtake the divine decree (al-qadar) it would be the evil eye [Muslim] Let’s learn about the meaning of the evil eye and ways to protect yourself and your productivity in shaa Allah!

What is the evil eye?

The Arabic word al-‘ayn (translated as the evil eye) refers to when a person harms another with his eye. It starts when the person likes a thing, then his evil feelings affect it by means of his repeated looking at the object of his jealousy.

It’s not for nothing that  Allah taught His Prophet to seek refuge with Him from the evil of the envier in a surah you should use yourself for protection: Wa min sharri haasidin idhaa hasad— And from the evil of the envier when he envies . . . [Quran.113:5]

So what is the difference between the evil eye and jealousy (envy)?

Everyone who puts the evil eye on another is envious, but not every envier puts the evil eye on another. The word haasid (envier) is more general in meaning than the word ‘aa’in (one who puts the evil eye on another), so seeking refuge with Allah from the one who envies includes seeking refuge with Him from the one who puts the evil eye on another. The evil eye is like an arrow which comes from the soul of the one who envies and the one who puts the evil eye on another towards the one who is envied and on whom the evil eye is put; sometimes it hits him and sometimes it misses. If the target is exposed and unprotected, it will affect him, but if the target is cautious and armed, the arrow will have no effect and may even come back on the one who launched it  [Ibn al Qayyim, Zaad al-Ma’aad].

The effect of the evil eye

Let’s take an incident from the seerah to realize the effect of the evil eye. The Prophet came out and traveled towards Makkah, until they were in the mountain pass of al-Kharaar in al-Jahfah. There Sahl ibn Haneef did ghusl, and he was a handsome white-skinned man with beautiful skin. ‘Aamir ibn Rabee’ah, one of Banu ‘Adiyy ibn Ka’b looked at him whilst he was doing ghusl and said: “I have never seen such beautiful skin as this, not even the skin of a virgin,” and Sahl fell to the ground. They went to Messenger of Allah  came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, can you do anything for Sahl, because by Allaah he cannot raise his head.” He said, “Do you accuse anyone with regard to him?”

They said, “ ‘Aamir ibn Rabee’ah looked at him.” So the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) called ‘Aamir and rebuked him strongly. He said, “Why would one of you kill his brother? If you see something that you like, then pray for blessing for him.” Then he said to him, “Wash yourself for him.” So he washed his face, hands, forearms, knees and the sides of his feet, and inside his izaar (lower garment) in the vessel. Then that water was poured over him, and a man poured it over his head and back from behind. He did that to him, then Sahl got up and joined the people and there was nothing wrong with him [Ahmad, An-Nasaa’i and others] This was the effect of someone admiring another without praying for blessings for the person. It shows that al-‘ayn can make you seriously ill.

Four actions to take against the evil eye

1.      Use al-mu’awwidhatayn and Surah Ikhlaas with the right intention.

This means the two surah’s for seeking refuge, which are the last two chapters of the Quran: surah Al-Falaq and surah An-Naas.

Awadha (عوذ) means he refuged and both surahs are in fact two supplications that begin with: Say: I seek refuge in the Lord . . . So next time you recite them, do so with a strong conviction they are an actual supplication and  protection for you.

Ibn Al-Qayyim said that “the effectiveness of these surahs is great to repel magic, evil eye, and the rest of the evils and the need for a slave to seek Allah’s protection from these two surahs is greater than his need for self, eating, drinking, and wearing dress [Al-Fawwaid]

a. Recite Surah Al-Ikhlaas, Al-Falaq, and An-Naas three times in the morning and evening.

The Prophet said: ‘Qul Hoo wAllahu Ahad’ and ‘Muwaidaitain’ when you enter the evening and when you wake up in the morning three times and it will protect you from everything.(Tirmidhee # 3575), Aby Daud (# 5084).

Make this a habit and you will gain protection and the great reward of reviving a sunnah, in shaa Allah!

b. Blow these surahs over your body before you go to sleep.

Aisha narrated that whenever Allah’s Messenger went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting surah Al-Ikhlaas, surah Al-Falaq and aurah An-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face, and front of his body. He used to do that three times. [Al-Bukhaaree]

Start teaching this habit to your children from their early years and it will be an amazing sadaqah jaariyah for you!

2. Say a’oodhu bi kalimaatillaahit-taammaati min sharri maa khalaq.

The Prophet said: Whosoever says at nightfall: أعوذ بكلمات الله التامات من شر ما خلق-I seek refuge in the complete words of Allah from the evil in what He has created- no harm shall affect him [Muslim] This is only takes ten seconds, key is you really make it part of your evening routine!

3. Protect the children.

Even though we do everything for our children’s education and future, children can also be affected by the evil eye and we should protect them according to the sunnah! The Prophet used to seek refuge for al-Hasan and al-Husayn and say:

أُعِيذُكُمَا بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ ، وَهَامَّةٍ ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَامَّةٍ – I seek refuge for you both in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every evil eye [At-Tirmidhee, Abu Dawood] Above is for two children; you can replace u’eedhukumaa’ (I seek refuge for you both) by u’eedhuka (for one boy), u’eedhuki (for one girl) or u’eedhukum (for more than three children). Memorize this supplication and use it on the children consistently. Use a sticky note in the house to remember if needed.

4. Pray for blessings.

Although it is correct that the evil eye comes from people who feel jealous (hasad) the scholars explained it can also come from someone who is not jealous but just likes something. The Prophet said: Whoever among you sees something in himself or in his possessions or in his brother that he likes, let him pray for blessing for it, because the evil eye is real [ Ibn al-Sunni , al-Haakim]

It is even possible to harm yourself, your wealth or a loved one. It is recommended to say: Allahumma baarik feehu, feeha or feehi ( O Allah, bless him, her or it) or the like.

So next time you see something nice someone has, or even seeing the beauty of your children or spouse, pray for blessings for them. This also means it is ok to like something someone has and want it for yourself; as long as you don’t wish that thing is taken away from the person and you make sure you pray for blessings for them!

5. Saying Mashaa’Allah laa quwatta illaa billaah is not necessarily related to the evil eye.

The hadith that was reported from Anas ibn Maalik  saying that the Messenger of Allah  said: Whoever sees something that he likes, and says, ‘Ma sha Allaah laa quwwata illa Billaah’, the evil eye will not affect him is classified as da’eef jiddan (very weak).  Allah says: It was better for you to say, when you entered your garden: Mashaa’Allaah laa hawla wa laa quwwatta illaa billaah [Quran, 18:39] This ayah is not related to jealousy, but rather Allah destroyed the man’s garden because of his disbelief and transgression.

6. Study ways of treatment from the sunnah.

If the evil is done and someone –or yourself— is already affected by the evil eye, it is crucial to follow the instructions from the sunnah, two examples of these cures are doing ruqyah (reciting certain ayaat and supplications) and if you  know who gave the evil eye, asking that person to wash themselves and pour the water over the affected person. It is strongly recommended to use trustworthy sources to study about these treatments. An example is the book: The world of the jinn and devils by Dr Umar Sulaiman al Ashqar.

May Allah ‘azza wa jall protect us all from the evils of the creation and cure all those who are affected by both physical and spiritual diseases, ameen!

Traditional Islamic Medicine and Remedies

Muslims turn to the Quran and Sunnah for guidance in all areas of life, including include health and medical matters. As collected in the Hadith, the Prophet Muhammad once said that "Allah did not create a disease for which he did not also create a cure." Muslims are therefore encouraged to explore and use both traditional and modern forms of medicine and to have faith that any cure is a gift from Allah.

Traditional medicine in Islam is often referred to as Medicine of the Prophet (al-tibb an-Nabawi). Muslims often explore the Medicine of the Prophet as an alternative to modern therapies, or as a supplement to modern medical treatment.

Here are some traditional remedies that are a part of Islamic tradition.

One should always consult with a medical professional before attempting any treatment. Some herbs may be harmful in certain conditions or when consumed in the wrong quantities.

Black Seed

Black caraway or cumin seed (Nigella sativa) is not related to the common kitchen spice. This seed originated in western Asia and is part of the buttercup family. The Prophet Muhammad once advised his followers:

Use the black seed, because it contains a cure for every type of ailment except death.

Black seed is said to help with digestion, and it also contains antihistamine, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and analgesic properties. Muslims often consume black seed to help with respiratory ailments, digestive issues, and to boost the immune system.

Honey

Honey is described as a source of healing in the Quran:

There comes forth from their [bees’] bellies, a drink of varying color wherein is healing for men. Verily, in this is indeed a sign for people who think (Quran 16:69).

It is also mentioned as one of the foods of Jannah:

The description of Paradise which the pious have been promised is that in it are rivers of water the taste and smell of which are not changed; rivers of milk of which the taste never changes; rivers of wine delicious to those who drink; and rivers of clarified honey, clear and pure... (Quran 47:15).

Honey was mentioned repeatedly by the Prophet as a "healing," a "blessing," and "the best medicine."

In modern times, it has been discovered that honey has antibacterial properties as well as other health benefits. Honey is composed of water, simple and complex sugars, minerals, enzymes, amino acids, and several different vitamins known to be conducive to good health.

Olive Oil

The Quran says:

"And a tree (olive) that springs forth from Mount Sinai, that grows oil, and it is a relish for the eaters. (Quran 23:20)."

The Prophet Muhammad also once told his followers:

"Eat the olive and anoint (yourselves) with it, for indeed it is from a blessed tree."

Olive oil contains monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, as well as Vitamin E. It is consumed to promote coronary health and is used on the skin to increase softness and elasticity.

Dates

Dates (temar) are a traditional and popular food for breaking the daily Ramadan fast. Eating dates after fasting helps to maintain blood sugar levels and is an excellent source of dietary fiber, potassium, magnesium, and complex sugars.

Zamzam Water

Zamzam water comes from an underground spring in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. It is known to contain large amounts of calcium, fluoride, and magnesium, necessary nutrients for good health.

Siwak

Twigs of the Arak tree (Salvadora persica) are commonly known as siwak or miswak. It is used as a natural toothbrush, and its oils are often used in modern tubes of toothpaste. Its soft fibers are rubbed gently over the teeth and gums to promote oral hygiene and gum health.

Moderation in Diet

The Prophet Muhammad advised his followers to sustain themselves, but not overeat. He said:

"The son of Adam [i.e. human beings] never fills a vessel worse than his stomach. The son of Adam only needs a few bites that would sustain him, but if he insists, one-third should be reserved for his food, another third for his drink, and the last third for his breathing."

This general advice is meant to prevent believers from over-stuffing themselves to the detriment of good health.

The benefits of proper sleep cannot be overstated. The Quran describes:

"It is He Who made the night a covering for you, and the sleep a rest, and He made the day to rise up again" (Quran 25:47, also see 30:23).

It was the habit of the early Muslims to sleep directly after Isha prayer, to wake up early with the dawn prayer, and to take short naps during the midday heat. On several occasions, the Prophet Muhammad expressed disapproval of zealous worshippers who gave up on sleep in order to pray all night long.

He told one:

"Offer prayers and also sleep at night, as your body has a right on you" and told another, "You should pray as long as you feel active, and when you get tired, sleep."

Evil Eye in Islam

The term “evil eye” usually refers to harm that comes to a person because of someone else’s jealousy or envy towards them. Many Muslims believe it to be real, and some incorporate specific practices in order to protect themselves or their loved ones from its effects. Others reject it as superstition or an “old wives’ tale.” What does Islam teach about the powers of the evil eye?

Definition of Evil Eye

The evil eye (al-ayn in Arabic) is a term used to describe misfortune that is transmitted from one person to another out of jealousy or envy. The misfortune of the victim may manifest as sickness, loss of wealth or family, or a streak of general bad luck. The person inflicting the evil eye may do so with or without intention.

What the Quran and Hadith Say About the Evil Eye

As Muslims, to decide whether something is real or superstition, we must turn to the Quran and the recorded practices and beliefs of the Prophet Muhammad (Hadith). The Quran explains:

“And the unbelievers who are bent on denying the truth, would all but kill you with their eyes whenever they hear this message. And they say, ‘Surely, he [Mohammad] is a man possessed!’” (Quran 68:51).

“Say: ‘I seek refuge with the Lord of the Dawn, from the mischief of created things; from the mischief of darkness as it overspreads; from the mischief of those who practice secret arts; and from the mischief of the envious one as he practices envy’” (Quran 113:1-5).

The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, spoke about the reality of the evil eye, and advised his followers to recite certain verses of the Quran to protect themselves. The Prophet also rebuked followers who admired someone or something without praising Allah:

“Why would one of you kill his brother? If you see something that you like, then pray for blessing for him.”

What the Evil Eye Causes

Unfortunately, some Muslims blame every little thing that goes “wrong” in their lives to the evil eye. People are accused of “giving an eye” to someone without any basis. There may even be instances when a biological cause, such as mental illness, is attributed to the evil eye and thus sound medical treatment is not pursued. One must be careful to recognize that there are biological disorders that may cause certain symptoms, and it is incumbent upon us to seek medical attention for such illnesses. We must also recognize that when things “go wrong” in our lives, we may be facing a test from Allah, and need to respond with reflection and repentance, not blame.

Whether it is the evil eye or another cause, nothing will touch our lives without the Qadr of Allah behind it. We must have faith that things happen in our lives for a reason, and not become overly obsessed with the possible effects of the evil eye. Obsessing or becoming paranoid about the evil eye is itself a sickness (waswaas), as it prevents us from thinking positively about Allah’s plans for us. While we may take measures to help strengthen our faith and protect ourselves from this evil, we cannot allow ourselves to be taken over with the whisperings of Shaytan. Allah alone can relieve our distress, and we must seek protection only from Him.

Protections From the Evil Eye

Only Allah can protect us from harm, and believing otherwise is a form of shirk. Some misguided Muslims try to protect themselves from the evil eye with talismans, beads, “Hands of Fatima,” small Qurans hanging around their necks or pinned onto their bodies, and such. This is not a trivial matter – these “lucky charms” do not offer any protection, and believing otherwise takes one outside of Islam into the destruction of kufr.

The best protection against the evil eye is those that bring one closer to Allah through remembrance, prayer, and reading of the Quran. These remedies can be found in the authentic sources of Islamic law, not from rumors, hearsay, or un-Islamic traditions.

Pray for blessings on another: Muslims do often say “masha’Allah” when praising or admiring someone or something, as a reminder to themselves and others that all good things come from Allah. Jealousy and envy should not enter the heart of a person who believes that Allah has bestowed blessings on people according to His will.

Ruqyah: This refers to the use of words from the Quran which are recited as a way of curing an afflicted person. Reciting ruqyah, as advised by the Prophet Muhammad, has the effect of strengthening the faith of a believer, and reminding him or her of Allah’s power. This strength of mind and renewed faith may help one to resist or fight against any evil or illness directed his or her way. Allah says in the Quran, “We send down stage by stage in the Quran, that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe…” (17:82). The recommended verses to read include:

Surah Al-Fatiha

The last two surahs of the Quran (Al-Falaq and An-Nas)

Ayat Al-Kursi

If you are reciting ruqyah for another person, you may add: “Bismillaahi arqeeka min kulli shay’in yu’dheeka, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘aynin haasid Allaahu yashfeek, bismillaahi arqeek (In the name of Allah I perform ruqyah for you, from everything that is harming you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye may Allah heal you. In the name of Allah I perform ruqyah for you).”

Du’a: It is recommended to recite some of the following du’a.

"Hasbi Allahu la ilaha illa huwa, 'alayhi tawakkaltu wa huwa Rabb ul-'arsh il-'azeem." Allah is sufficient for me; there is no god but He. On Him is my trust, He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne" (Quran 9:129).

"A’oodhu bi kalimat-Allah al-tammati min sharri maa khalaq." I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of that which He has created.

"A’oodhu bi kalimat-Allah al-tammati min ghadabihi wa ‘iqabihi, wa min sharri ‘ibadihi wa min hamazat al-shayateeni wa an yahduroon." I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His wrath and punishment, from the evil of His slaves and from the evil promptings of the devils and from their presence.

"A’oodhu bi kalimaat Allaah al-taammah min kulli shaytaanin wa haammah wa min kulli ‘aynin laammah." I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allaah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every bad eye.

"Adhhib al-ba's Rabb an-naas, wa'shfi anta al-Shaafi, laa shifaa'a illa shifaa'uka shifaa' laa yughaadir saqaman.” Take away the pain, O Lord of mankind, and grant healing, for You are the Healer, and there is no healing but Your healing that leaves no trace of sickness.

Water: If the one who cast the evil eye is identified, it is also recommended to have that person make wudu, and then pour the water over the person who was afflicted in order to rid them of the evil.

How can I protect myself from black magic?

The scientific mindset is that which attributes phenomena to their scientific causes relying on evidences and proofs. The superstitious mindset is that which does not attribute phenomena to their real causes but to the unseen and does not rely on proofs. A Muslim person must have a scientific mindset that qualifies him to worship Allah, administer the earth, and purify the self. He must not heed the superstitious mindset that follows delusions, suppositions, and does not rely on evidences and proofs. At present, the superstitious mindset has become widespread among Muslims and many ascribe disruptions in rizq (provisions) and other afflictions to magic, the evil eye and the like.

The right thing to do is examine the true and logical reasons behind these phenomena and try to overcome them through the law of casuality on which Allah bases the interests of His servants. You are to seek the help of Allah in this. A Muslim must likewise increase his faith in Allah by accepting what Allah destines for him and by making dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and du'a` (supplication), sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in abundance and reciting the tried and tested invocations of ruqya (healing words). The ruqya is merely a protection against evil and depression by the will of Allah; it is not magic as some construe it. It is necessary to the take into account the relevant causes for every individual case.

This does not mean that magic and jinn do not exist; we have been informed of their existence. However, we disapprove of indulging in attributing everything that happens to us to magic and jinn. The majority of those who claim to offer cures for magic and jinn [possessions] are charlatans and materialistic while the majority of those who assume that they are under a spell or are harmed by jinn are delusional.

In any case, the person who does not find a logical cause for something that happens to him and is convinced that he is bewitched or the like, must use the ruqya and the permissible means of seeking refuge in Allah such as reciting the chapters of Fatiha, al-Nas, Al-Falaq and the supplications for refuge that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used. Moreover, a person may use supplications of refuge that the Prophet did not mention but which do not contravene the etiquette of du'a` and dhikr. It has been reported that when witchcraft was used against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he took out the comb and combings that were used for the spell. He then recited surat Al-Nas and Al-Falaq and Allah the Almighty cured him.

Cure From Black Magic, Jinn & Illness

In recent times, people distressed with ailments - internal and external - have resorted to people who cure through ta'wīdh and, in some cases, through the agency of jinn (or mu'akkal as some call it). I do not intend to go into the depth of the evils that lie within this institution, but would sincerely request readers to take note of the following points with a fair mind and without being biased so that we may be saved from the deceit of Shaytān which is hidden in the form of pious saintly people who claim to have supernatural powers to cure illnesses and solve problems.

Illnesses, problems, calamities, quarrels are natural for humans, and one should look for remedy and solution through lawful means. One should not, without any endeavour, assume the problem or illness to be through black magic or an outside effect. Refer to the doctors and have it treated.

If one is suffering from anxiety and depression, and cannot find peace of mind, then he/she should check his/her life and see where the Commands of Allāh and His Rasūlullāh sallallāhu 'alayhi wasallam are being violated. Come nearer to Allāh through His Remembrance, for that is where the contentment of heart and peace of mind lies.

In the Remembrance of Allāh do hearts find satisfaction. (13:28)

The knowledge of the unseen is an Attribute of Allāh the Almighty Only. None in the heavens and on earth knows the unseen except Allāh. Many of these "so called" healers claim to know many things of the unseen, and to believe such people could lead one to kufr. Rasūlullāh sallallāhu 'alayhi wasallam has said, "One who resorts to an 'arrāf (fortune-teller) and asks him about anything, Salāh will not be accepted from him for forty days." (Muslim) Rasūlullāh sallallāhu 'alayhi wasallam has also said, "One who resorts to a kāhin (soothsayer/claimant to the knowledge of the unseen) and believes him in what he says, has rejected that which has been sent down to Prophet Muhammad sallallāhu 'alayhi wasallam."

Those who violate the law of Allāh cannot be pious. A Walī (Friend) of Allāh is one who abstains from disobedience to Allāh. Those who touch women, who treat women without any veil or partition, who sit with women in solitude i.e. without a male mahram, how can they possibly be the Friends of Allāh. Do not be deceived, friends.

In case of doubt, contact your local 'Ulamā or those who have been known to you for years for their taqwā, piety and reliability. insha'allāh, their guidance will save you from going into the wrong hands.

How to Safeguard Yourself from Black-Magic

Allāh ta'ālā, through his Infinite Mercy, has taught His Servants such du'a and recitation which does not only cure, but saves them from the evil effects of black-magic, jinn, etc.:

After completing Fardh Salāh, recite the masnūn wazā'if and thereafter Āyat-ul-Kursī.

Note: Āyat-ul-Kursī is a verse from Sūrah Al-Baqarah starting “Allāhu lā'ilāha illā huw-al...” (2:255)

Before going to Sleep, read Āyat-ul-Kursī. Rasūlullāh sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam has said, "Whoever recites Āyat-ul-Kursī at night, a protector (angel) from Allāh continually safeguards him and Shaytān will not come near him until morning."(Bukhari)

Read Sūrah Al-lkhlās, Sūrah Al-Falaq and Sūrah An-Nās after every Fardh Salāh. (Read them thrice after the Fair and Maghrib Salāh).

Before going to sleep, read the last two verses of Sūrah Al-Baqarah. Rasūlullāh sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam has said, "Whoever recites the last two verses of Sūrah Al-Baqarah at night, they will be sufficient for him.” (They will save him from Shaytān and other misfortunes). (Al-Bukhārī, Muslim)

Read the following du'ā in abundance:

A'ūdhu bikalimātil-lāhit-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq

Translation: I seek refuge in all the Perfect Words of Allāh from the mischief of His Creations. (Muslim, At-Tirmidhī)

Read the following du'ā at the beginning of the day and night:

Bismillāhil-ladhī lā yadhurru ma'a-smihī shay'un fil-ardhi wa lā fis-samā'i wahuwas-samī'ul-'alīm

Translation: In the Name of Allāh with Whose Name nothing can cause harm in the earth and the heaven. And He is All Hearing, All Knowing. (Abū Dāwūd, At-Tirmidhī)

The above mentioned prayers will, insha'allāh, prevent the evil effects of black-magic and other outside effects. These are measures derived directly from the teaching of the Messenger of Allāh sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam and, if recited regularly, with sincerity, yaqīn and Trust in Allāh, then one will never complain of evil-effects.

Remedy for Illnesses

Regular recitation of the above mentioned is also effective in removing evil effects. Along with these adhkār, turn to Allāh, repent sincerely and beseech Him. After all, it is He Only that brings cure to every illness and solution to every problem. The following du'ā are also effective for cure:

Allāhumma rabban-nās, adhhibil-bās, ishfi antash-shāfī, lā shifā'a illā shifā'uk, shifā'an lā yughādiru suqmā

Translation: O Allāh, O the Lord of the people! Remove the pain. Grant cure, You are the Curer. There is no cure except Your Cure. Grant such a cure that leaves no sickness. (Al-Bukhārī, Muslim)

Bismillāhi arqīka, min kulli shay'in yu'dhīka, wa min sharri kulli nafsin aw 'aynin hāsidin, allāhu yashfīka, bismillāhi arqīka.

Translation: In The Name of Allāh I make damm (blow) upon you from everything which harms you and from the evil of every person or jealous eye. May Allāh grant you cure. In The Name of Allāh I make damm (blow) on you. (Muslim, Ibn Mājah)

Once again, remember that those people who violate the laws of Allāh, cannot be saintly persons. Seek guidance from 'Ulamā who are known to you. Insha'allāh, you will not go wrong. May Allāh safeguard all Muslims from calamities; may He safeguard their Dīn; may He give them the correct understanding of Dīn; may He keep them away from every action which is contrary to the teachings of Islam and which brings the Displeasure of Allāh. Āmīn.

ISM E AZAM

ISM E AZAM ka wazifa jis main ham apko bataen gay k Ism e Azam kiya hota hai? Ism e Azam kin hastion ko ata hota hai? Ism e Azam ki badolat Ambiya e Karam ﷷﷵ say kin mojezat ka zahoor hua? Ism e Azam ki shan main hamaray Bazurg kia farmatay hain? Kiya ism e azam har insan ko ata ho sakta hai? Ham apko ism e azam k fazail ki aik mamooli c jhalak dikhate hain

Ism e Azam kiya hota hai?

Pray (Pray For All) k Bazurg farmatay hain k har pak naam Allah ka hai aur Allah ko jis bhi Pak naam say pukara jae wo ism e azam kehlata hai. Ism e azam k wasilay say mangi gai dua lamhon main qabooliat ka darja pa leti hai. Agar wo chahen to ism e azam k waseelay aur Khuda k hukm say hawaon ka rukh morr dein. Bemaron ko shifa day dain. Nafraton ko mohabbat main badal dein. Bay auladon k liye dua Karen to unhen aulad ata ho jae. Faqeer ko badshah aur badshah ko faqeer bana dein. Jinnat un say khof khate hain jin k Pas haqeeqi ism e azam ki taqat ho. Algharz jinhen ism e azam ata ho jae un k liye kuch na mumkin nahi rehta. Jesa k Rasool Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم nay farmaya k jis Shakhs ko ism e azam tak rasai hasil hui goya is baat ki alamat hai k uski murad puri hui.

Ism e Azam Kin Hastiyon ko Ata Hua?

Ism e Azam Ambiya e Karam ﷷﷵ ko ata kiya gaya to un say aisay aisay mojzat ka zahoor hua jinhen dekh kar insani aqal dang reh jae. Auliya Allah k pas bhi ism e azam hi ki taqat hoti hai jis k zariye wo kul insaniat main us zikar ka faiz aam kar k unhen Allah k hukam say pareshanion say nijat dilatay hain.

Ism e Azam ki Barkat se Ambiya e Karam ﷷﷵ say kin Mojzat ka Zahoor hua?

Hazrat Moosa ﷷﷵ ko jo ism e azam ata hua uski badolat unhon nay Firon k baray say baray Jadu k waar ka moun tor jawab dia. Ism e azam ki badolat Hazrat Essa ﷷﷵ murdon ko Allah k hukam say zinda kar dete aur bemaron ko shifa ata farmatay. Hazrat Suleman ﷷﷵ ko jo ism e azam ata hua wo un k takht Mubarak par tehreer tha jiski badolat tamam jinnat un say bay hud khof mehsoos kartay thay. Hazrat Khizar ﷷﷵ ism e azam ki badolat aj bhi zinda hain. Hazoor Nabi Kareem صلى الله عليه وسلم k pas ism e azam ki hi kul taqat thi k jiski badolat waqia mairaj sharif jo arbon kharob salon k taweel waqt main waqoo pazeer hona tha. Ism e Azam ki barkat se sirf chand lamhon main waqoo pazeer hua aur unhen ziarat e Parwardigar naseeb hui.

Ism e Azam ki Shan Pray (Pray For All) K Bazurgon Ki Zubani

Hamaray Bazurg Ism e Azam ki Shan main bian farmatay hain k Insan Allah Pak k sirf 99 naamon say waqif hai jab k Allah k kai hazar naam hain jinhen insan nahi janta magar har insan dua ki qabooliat k liye ism e azam janna chahta hai. Lakin haqeeqat ye hai k haqeeqi ism e azm jab kisi hasti ko ata hota hai to usay posheeda rakha jata hai taa k koi na ahal us isme azam ka ghalat istemal na kar sake. Jesa k Rasool Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم nay kisi shakhs ko dua karte huye suna to farmaya k qasam hai us zaat ki k jis k qabzay main meri jaan hai. Is Shakhs nay ism e azam k waseelay say dua mangi hai aur ism e azam k wasilay say jab bhi dua mangi jae qabool ki jati hai. Jab Allah say koi sawal kia jae pura kiya jata hai. (Abu Dawood, Tirmazi, Ibne Majah).

Rasool Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم nay aik aur muqam par farmaya k isme azam Surah e Hashr ki akhri ayat main hai. In ahadees mubaraka say bhi sabit hota hai k Rasool Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم nay bhi ism e azam ki nishan dahi isharatan hi farmai.

Kiya Ism e Azam har Insan ko Ata ho sakta Hai?

Pray (Pray For All) k Bazurg farmatay hain k hamaray tajarbat o mushahidat k mutabiq ism e azam ijazat ka naam hai. Ijazat unhi ko ata hoti hai jo insaniat say mohabbat karte hain jesa k Ambiya e Karam ﷷﷵ aur Auliya Karam رحمتہ اللہ علیہ nay ki to Allah Pak nay unhen Ism e Azam ki ijazat

ata farmai taa k us ism e azam k faiz say wo logon ki mushkilat ko hal kar saken. Hamaray Bazurgon ka kehna hai k jab kisi insan ko khas Rohani kuliyat k tehat us k naam ka ism e azam tilawat karne ki ijazat mil jati hai aur wo insan apnay naam ka ism e azam hasil kar lene k baad uski tilawat ko apni zindagi k mamool bana lay to na sirf uski har jaez dua qabool hoti hai balkay wo haqeeqi ism e azam tak pohanchane ka waseela bhi banta hai. Haqeeqi ism e azam tak wohi Insan pohanch sakta hai jis k dil main insaniat ka dard ho aur wo insaniyat se mohabbat karne wala ho. Bazurg farmatay hain k jo Insan apnay naam ka ism e azam khas Rohani kuliyat k tehat hasil kar lay aur us k dil main insaniat ka dard paida ho jae aur phir wo dosray insano k liye khair ka bais banay to us par anwar o tajaliyat ka zahoor hona shuru ho jata hai aur insaniat ka dard bhi unhi ko ata hota hai jin par Allah ka khas karam ho.

Apnay Naam Ka Ism e Azam Hasil Karain

Bazurgon k tajarbat o mushahidat ki ru say jab Insan khas Rohani kuliyat k tehat apna ism e azam hasil kar k tilawat karta hai to dua ki qabooliat bohat taizi say hoti hai. Masal k tor par Mohammad Ali k naam k adad hain 202 aur uska ism e azam Ya Mominu, Ya Allah, Mizaj Atshi aur ansar khaki hai. Isi tarha ism e azam ya Mominu, Ya Allah k adad bhi 202, mizaj atshi aur ansar khaki hai. Jab Mohammad Ali apnay naam, adad, mizaj aur ansar say mutabiqat rakhne wala ism e azam ya Mominu, Ya Allah ki tilawat ko apni zindagi ka mamool banaye ga to uski har jaez dua fori qabooliat ka darja paye gi. Is lehaza say Mohammad Ali k naam ka ism e azam hi wo behtreen waseela banay ga jis k zariye wo us haqeeqi isme azam tak pohanch sakta hai jo Ambiya e Karam ﷷﷵ aur Auliya e Karam Jab k insan us haqeeqi ism e azam ko kitabon main talash karta hai.

Note:

Agar ap nay pehle say koi wazifa, ayat mubaraka, ism e azam ya koi bhi Rohani amal shuru kiya hua hai to us k sath ap apnay naam ka ism e azam hasil kar k uski talawat bhi kar sakte hain. Baaz afrad aik waqt main kai Wazaif shuru kar lete hain taki unki dua jaldi qabool ho magar hamaray Bazurgon k tajarbat o mushahidat k mutabiq aik waqt main kai Wazaif karnay main koi mazaiqa nahi lakin is tarha insan ki tawajo barqarar nahi rehti. Isliye wo Allah ka zikar la parwahi say karta hai jis waja say uski zahri dua ki qabooliat main takheer ho sakti hai. Jesa k Rasool Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم nay bhi farmaya k jab bhi Allah say dua mango to dua ki qabooliat par yaqeen rakho kiun k Allah ghafil, la parwah aur mayoos dil ki dua qabool nahi karta.
Dua: Ham dua go hain k Allah Pak ki zaat Hazoor Nabi Kareem صلى الله عليه وسلم k sadqe aur ism e azam k waseelay say apki tamam jaez duaon ko qabool o manzoor farmaen ameen sum ameen.

Surah Muhammad

Surah Name Surah Muhammad
Makki/Madni Madni
Surah Number 47th
No. of Verses 38
No. of Rukus 4
Position Juz ‘26
Surah Muhammad is a Madni Surah. It is the 47th Surah of the Holy Quran which consists of a total of 38 Ayats.
It is also called as the name of Surah Al-Qital which means fighting. All Madni Surahs are related to the guidance of a specific Ummah and the problems that are faced by them.
About Surah Muhammad (S.A.W):
This is a Surah which was revealed after the victory of Muslims in the Battle of Badr. It highlights the main events and the miracles that took place during the battle.Battle of Badr:
This battle is also known as ‘Ghazwa Badr’.
The Battle of Badr was fought on Tuesday on 13th of March in the 2nd year of Hijrat. It was fought against the people of Makkah who belonged to the tribe of Quraish.
Its purpose was to protect and foster Islam.
In the battle, there were 313 Muslims with a total of 6 Armored soldiers, 8 swords, 70 camels and 2 horses.
The Muslim army included Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A), Hazrat Umar (R.A), Hazrat Ali (R.A)and many other great personalities.
Whereas the non Muslim army was 1000 in number. They were well equipped with 600 Armored soldiers all carrying weapons. They had 700 camels and 300 horses.
The non Muslims reached the Badr and occupied all the important places with resources, whereas the Muslims had occupied the left over places with no well of water. However, the Almighty Allah showed a miracle of rain at night from which the Muslim army collected enough water for them.
There was also a fierce wind that blew at night. This wind blew away all the tents of non Muslims while they were enjoying gambling as it seemed to them a definite victory and the end of Muslims.
“When He caused calm to fall on you as a security from Him and sent down upon you water from the cloud that He might thereby purify you, and take away from you the uncleanness of the Shaitan, and that He might fortify your hearts and steady (your) footsteps thereby”
There is a Quranic verse that says:
And; “He is with you wherever you are.” (57:4)
Another saying from the Quran says:
“I am with you: give firmness to the Believers: I will instill fear into the hearts of the Unbelievers: Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them.” (8:12)
In this battle the Muslims gained victory. This battle proved to be of great benefit for the Muslims as in it all the remaining people who survived accepted Islam except two people. Muslims only lost 14 people, whereas in case of non Muslims, 70 were killed and 70 were taken as captives who were treated very kindly.

Theme of Surah Muhammad (S.A.W):

The theme of this Surah is about the fight between the truth seekers (the Muslims) and falsehood (non believers).
1. Those who disbelieve [in the Oneness of Allah, and in the Message of Prophet Muhammad ], and hinder (men) from the Path of Allah (Islamic Monotheism), He will render their deeds vain .
2. But those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and believe in that which is sent down to Muhammad ( ), for it is the truth from their Lord, He will expiate from them their sins, and will make good their state.
3. That is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood, while those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus does Allah set forth their parables for mankind.
4. So, when you meet (in fight Jihad in Allah’s Cause), those who disbelieve smite at their necks till when you have killed and wounded many of them, then bind a bond firmly (on them, i.e. take them as captives). Thereafter (is the time) either for generosity (i.e. free them without ransom), or ransom (according to what benefits Islam), until the war lays down its burden.
Thus [you are ordered by Allah to continue in carrying out Jihad against the disbelievers till they embrace Islam (i.e. are saved from the punishment in the Hell-fire) or at least come under your protection], but if it had been Allah’s Will, He Himself could certainly have punished them (without you). But (He lets you fight), in order to test you, some with others. But those who are killed in the Way of Allah, He will never let their deeds be lost,
5. He will guide them and set right their state.
6. And admit them to Paradise which He has made known to them (i.e. they will know their places in Paradise more than they used to know their houses in the world).
7. O you who believe! If you help (in the cause of) Allah, He will help you, and make your foothold firm.
8. But those who disbelieve (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism), for them is destruction, and (Allah) will make their deeds vain.
9. That is because they hate that which Allah has sent down (this Qur’an and Islamic laws, etc.), so He has made their deeds fruitless.
10. Have they not travelled through the earth, and seen what was the end of those before them? Allah destroyed them completely and a similar (fate awaits) the disbelievers.
11. That is because Allah is the Maula (Lord, Master, Helper, Protector, etc.) of those who believe, and the disbelievers have no Maula (lord, master, helper, protector, etc.).
Its real purpose was also to test the believers about their faith in Allah. Many Muslims were reluctant to fight for the cause of Allah. This shows the strength of their faith and belief in Allah.

Benefits of Surah Muhammad:

  • It is said by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) in the commentary of Majma’ul Bayan that the one who recites this Surah will have his thirst quenched by the drink from the rivers of Jannah
  • The one who recites this Surah will never have any doubt about his religion.
  • He will not fall in any type of shirk or disbelief.
  • Thousand angles will send salutations to his grave at his death.
  • When he will rise from his grave, he will see the blessed face of the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H).
  • If this Surah is written and kept by a person, he/she will be protected from all evils and problems whether he is asleep or awake.
Conclusion:
Surah Muhammad (S.A.W) is a very beautiful Surah that gives relief to the heart and helps a person to keep his belief in Allah more firm. So if anyone feels that he is having a doubt in anything related to the religion, then he should recite this Surah.

Surah Muhammad

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

  1. Those who reject Allah and hinder (men) from the Path of Allah,- their deeds will Allah render astray (from their mark).
  2. But those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, and believe in the (Revelation) sent down to Muhammad - for it is the Truth from their Lord,- He will remove from them their ills and improve their condition.
  3. This because those who reject Allah follow vanities, while those who believe follow the Truth from their Lord: Thus does Allah set forth for men their lessons by similitudes.
  4. Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers (in fight), smite at their necks; At length, when ye have thoroughly subdued them, bind a bond firmly (on them): thereafter (is the time for) either generosity or ransom: Until the war lays down its burdens. Thus (are ye commanded): but if it had been Allah´s Will, He could certainly have exacted retribution from them (Himself); but (He lets you fight) in order to test you, some with others. But those who are slain in the Way of Allah,- He will never let their deeds be lost.
  5. Soon will He guide them and improve their condition,
  6. And admit them to the Garden which He has announced for them.
  7. O ye who believe! If ye will aid (the cause of) Allah, He will aid you, and plant your feet firmly.
  8. But those who reject (Allah),- for them is destruction, and (Allah) will render their deeds astray (from their mark).
  9. That is because they hate the Revelation of Allah; so He has made their deeds fruitless.
  10. Do they not travel through the earth, and see what was the End of those before them (who did evil)? Allah brought utter destruction on them, and similar (fates await) those who reject Allah.
  11. That is because Allah is the Protector of those who believe, but those who reject Allah have no protector.
  12. Verily Allah will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds, to Gardens beneath which rivers flow; while those who reject Allah will enjoy (this world) and eat as cattle eat; and the Fire will be their abode.
  13. And how many cities, with more power than thy city which has driven thee out, have We destroyed (for their sins)? and there was none to aid them.
  14. Is then one who is on a clear (Path) from his Lord, no better than one to whom the evil of his conduct seems pleasing, and such as follow their own lusts?
  15. (Here is) a Parable of the Garden which the righteous are promised: in it are rivers of water incorruptible; rivers of milk of which the taste never changes; rivers of wine, a joy to those who drink; and rivers of honey pure and clear. In it there are for them all kinds of fruits; and Grace from their Lord. (Can those in such Bliss) be compared to such as shall dwell for ever in the Fire, and be given, to drink, boiling water, so that it cuts up their bowels (to pieces)?
  16. And among them are men who listen to thee, but in the end, when they go out from thee, they say to those who have received Knowledge, "What is it he said just then?" Such are men whose hearts Allah has sealed, and who follow their own lusts.
  17. But to those who receive Guidance, He increases the (light of) Guidance, and bestows on them their Piety and Restraint (from evil).
  18. Do they then only wait for the Hour,- that it should come on them of a sudden? But already have come some tokens thereof, and when it (actually) is on them, how can they benefit then by their admonition?
  19. Know, therefore, that there is no god but Allah, and ask forgiveness for thy fault, and for the men and women who believe: for Allah knows how ye move about and how ye dwell in your homes.
  20. Those who believe say, "Why is not a sura sent down (for us)?" But when a sura of basic or categorical meaning is revealed, and fighting is mentioned therein, thou wilt see those in whose hearts is a disease looking at thee with a look of one in swoon at the approach of death. But more fitting for them-
  21. Were it to obey and say what is just, and when a matter is resolved on, it were best for them if they were true to Allah.
  22. Then, is it to be expected of you, if ye were put in authority, that ye will do mischief in the land, and break your ties of kith and kin?
  23. Such are the men whom Allah has cursed for He has made them deaf and blinded their sight.
  24. Do they not then earnestly seek to understand the Qur´an, or are their hearts locked up by them?
  25. Those who turn back as apostates after Guidance was clearly shown to them,- the Evil One has instigated them and busied them up with false hopes.
  26. This, because they said to those who hate what Allah has revealed, "We will obey you in part of (this) matter"; but Allah knows their (inner) secrets.
  27. But how (will it be) when the angels take their souls at death, and smite their faces and their backs?
  28. This because they followed that which called forth the Wrath of Allah, and they hated Allah´s good pleasure; so He made their deeds of no effect.
  29. Or do those in whose hearts is a disease, think that Allah will not bring to light all their rancour?
  30. Had We so wiled, We could have shown them up to thee, and thou shouldst have known them by their marks: but surely thou wilt know them by the tone of their speech! And Allah knows all that ye do.
  31. And We shall try you until We test those among you who strive their utmost and persevere in patience; and We shall try your reported (mettle).
  32. Those who reject Allah, hinder (men) from the Path of Allah, and resist the Messenger, after Guidance has been clearly shown to them, will not injure Allah in the least, but He will make their deeds of no effect.
  33. O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the messenger, and make not vain your deeds!
  34. Those who reject Allah, and hinder (men) from the Path of Allah, then die rejecting Allah,- Allah will not forgive them.
  35. Be not weary and faint-hearted, crying for peace, when ye should be uppermost: for Allah is with you, and will never put you in loss for your (good) deeds.
  36. The life of this world is but play and amusement: and if ye believe and guard against Evil, He will grant you your recompense, and will not ask you (to give up) your possessions.
  37. If He were to ask you for all of them, and press you, ye would covetously withhold, and He would bring out all your ill-feeling.
  38. Behold, ye are those invited to spend (of your substance) in the Way of Allah: But among you are some that are niggardly. But any who are niggardly are so at the expense of their own souls. But Allah is free of all wants, and it is ye that are needy. If ye turn back (from the Path), He will substitute in your stead another people; then they would not be like you!

Introduction:

Surah Muhammad (47) is a Madani (Medina revealed) surah. It is also known as surah al Qital [Fighting].

Makkan surahs have guidance for ALL of mankind.

Madinah surahs have more guidance specific to the Ummah and the problems they face.

Why is it Important to study Madani surahs'?
We will be able to see the Advice and Reminders Allah gives to the Ummah through Madani revelation.

We will also see our Relationship with the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad (sal Allah alayhi wasalam) insha' Allah through this surah.

It is also important to know the Madani surahs' because they give the criterion between the believer and the hypocrite.

This study of Madani surahs' will be a good contrast for us since we have studied many Makkah surahs' earlier (in Juzz 'Amma).

This surah has a strong focus on the first battle of this Ummah - the battle of Badr. So the language will be strong in tone.

This surah is almost an entire explanation of the last ayah of the previous surah; Ahqaf (46) - a Makkan surah.

Last ayah of surah al Ahqaf:

بَلَاغٌ ۚ فَهَلْ يُهْلَكُ إِلَّا الْقَوْمُ الْفَاسِقُونَ
Balaagh (an Open communication which should reach everyone) - then who will be destroyed except the Corrupt nation? [Ahqaf 46:35]

This is a warning to all corrupt nations - that they will be destroyed soon.

Literary Point of View:

Surah Anfal (8) is also a commentary on the battle of Badr. Surah at-Tawba is a commentary on the last of battles in the seerah (Fat-h Makkah and Tabuk).

Surah Muhammad is a introduction to the first victory - Badr. And then the next surah al-Fat-h (49) is the next victory of al Hudaybiah.

The name of Prophet Muhammad is mentioned specifically in this surah.

The name "Muhammad" is mentioned 4 times in the Qur'an;

1- surah aal Imran (3:144) - وَمَامُحَمَّدٌ إِلَّا رَسُولٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِهِ الرُّسُلُ wa maa muhammad il-laa rasool qad khalat min qablihi ar-Rusul - and Muhammad is except a Messenger, many Messengers passed away before him..

Muhammad is not the father of your men but he is the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the Prophets)..

3 - surah Muhammad (47:2) وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَآمَنُوا بِمَا نُزِّلَ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍوَهُوَ الْحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّهِمْand those who believe and do good deeds and believe what was sent down upon Muhammad and it is the truth from their Master..

4 - surah al Fat-h (48:29مُّحَمَّدٌ رَّسُولُ اللَّهِ - Muhammadun Rasool Allah... - Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

a - Surah al-Saff 61:6 - the nameAhmad is mentioned by prophet Jesus.

Jesus gave the good news of Prophet Muhammad]bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name isAhmad."

b - And in other parts of the Qur'an; Ya ayyuhan-Naby/Rasool (O Prophet/Messenger) etc. is mentioned.

Even amongst the 5 places in the Qur'an where Muhammad or Ahmad is mentioned, the word 'Rasool' (Messenger) is mentioned near to it.

However, the only exception is in the surah of surah Muhammad itself. There is no mention of 'Rasool'/Messenger in this surah.

What could be the wisdom behind 'Rasool' not being mentioned next to Muhammad?

There were 3 types of people who entered into Islam during the Madani era:

1 - People who knew the truthfulness and seriousness of Islam - so they submitted to it whole-heartedly.

2 - Hypocrites who only became Muslims so they do not feel as outcasts in society.

3 - Weak believers who did not know that Islam required full submission and full obedience to Allah's Messenger, Muhammad (sal Allah alayhi wasalam.)

When fighting was ordered by Prophet Muhammad, the groups 2 and 3 were shocked. They found out that they had to fight the strong elite of the Arabs - the Quraysh, who were known for their bravery and strength in war.

These two groups wanted an excuse so that they would not have to fight. They could not show they were cowards or that they were hypocritical, so they came up with a response.

Why do we have to fight when it has not been stated in the Qur'an (that we have to fight)?

Allah wanted to show these people that what Prophet Muhammad says in matters of religion is equal to what Allah says, since afterall - he is Allah's Messenger.

وَيُرِيدُونَ أَن يُفَرِّقُوا بَيْنَ اللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِ- they desire to differentiate between Allah and His Messenger [in regard to rulings] (Nisa'4:150)

SoAllah is telling us and them that what Muhammad (sal Allah alayhi wasalam) says is part of the religion of Allah, and that what he says is a command from Allah. Even if that command is not in the Qur'an.

So Allah purposelly does not mention Muhammad 'RasoolAllah' (Muhammad the Messenger of Allah). Because even by not mentioning 'RasoolAllah' - you still have to obey him in full-submission. Since that is what you agreed to by becoming Muslim.

The main point is: You should not differentiate between what Prophet Muhammad commands, and what Allah commands in the Qur'an. They are from the same source.

To cause separation between Allah and His Messenger / the Qur'an and the Sunnah is the trait of the hypocrites.

Ayah 1:

aladheenakafaroo wa saddoo 'an sabeeli-llahi aDallaa'maalahum

Those who disbelieved and obstructed from the path of Allah, (Allah has) Wastedtheir actions.

Those who disbelieve (the Quraysh/polytheists)

aladheenaKafaroo (past tense/disbelieve = disbelieveD )..
Not - aladheena yaKfuroo - those who disbelieve (present-future tense) - which would mean that their disbelief may change in the future.

By using past tense - it is assuring that they will remain firm upon their disbelief for certain.

those who disbelieveD..

..wa saddoo 'an sabeel-illah - and obstructed from the path of Allah..

al Kashshaaf:Saddoo - the word Sadd could be either;

Laazim (transitive): They Obstruct OTHERs from the path of Allah= Disbelievers.

Muta'adi (intransitive): They obstruct THEMSELVEsfrom the path of Allah = Hypocrites.

All the efforts and plannings they make against Allah's Messenger:

1 - aDalla a'maalahum.. - (Allah) Put their efforts to Waste..

The disbelievers and hypocrites throughout history plot deeply, with alot of effort -day and night- against the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad and those who try to implement the Sunnah (Prophetic way.)

Allah tells us that He puts all their efforts into waste (Dalla - put to Waste).

In surah Feel [105:2], Allah says;

aLam yaj'al kaydahum fee taDleel - did He not put their efforts into Waste? [present-future tense implies Continuity].

Past tense form - Dal-lala = to put to waste:

aDalla - (if'aal - iDlaal [masdar form]): =Wasting All of it (efforts) in One Go.

taDleel - to put to Waste over time. (this was used in surah Feel because gradually the army of the Elephant / Abraha prepared to take down the Ka'aba, and during their gradual preparations - Allah was gradually putting their efforts to Waste).

The word in the first ayah of surah Muhammad is aDalla;

Allah put all their efforts (of opposing the Sunnah) to waste in One go.

2 - Another interpretation of this ayah could be;

aDalla a'maalaHum

The word 'Aml = actions which you do based on Consciousness.

Usually the word 'Aml is used for Good Actions in the Qur'anic language.

So Allah may imply that the disbelievers and hypocrites may have done some good actions in their lives i.e. feeding the poor, freeing slaves etc.

But because of their disbelief in the message revealed to Allah's Messenger, Muhammad (sal Allah alayhi wasalam) -Allah has made all their 'Aml (good actions) go to Waste in one go (aDalla a'maalaHum).
There are 3 main beliefs in Islam which we should always focus on conveying (in da'wah/inviting others to Islamic teachings):

1 - Allah / God.
2 - Prophethood / Messengers'.
3 - Afterlife - Judgment Day, Hellfire and Paradise.

This surah is specific to conveying the message that what Prophet Muhammad says is equal to what Allah says in regard to commands and prohibitions.

Ayah 1 continued:

aladheenakafaroowasaddoo 'an sabeeli-llahi aDallaa'maalahum

Those whodisbelievedandobstructed from the path of Allah, (Allah has) Wastedtheir actions.

Aladheena - those who..

it is anIsm maWsool -

a - it is not specific, it is supposed to have words AFTER it so we can understand what/who is being meant.
b - it should - in normal sentence structure - have a word/s BEFORE it.

Due to point (b) - some scholars said that this surah may be a continuation of the last ayah of the previous surah al Ahqaf. Since it is not normal for a new sentence to suddenly begin with the word 'Aladheena' (those who..).

Surah al Ahqaf is late Makki.

Surah Muhammad is early Madani, it is near, close to or after the battle of Badr.

Aladheena can be used to;
- someone who the hearer/reader is already famililar with (due to a previous introduction).
- someone who has already been mentioned before.

Huda lil muttaqeen. ALADHEENA yu'minoona bi-'l ghayb..
(that is the book in which there is no doubt. Guidance for the God fearing who guard against evil. THOSE WHO believe in the unseen..
(surah al Baqarah 2: 2-4)

Historical Background of the Surah:

3 Fundamental Groups during the time of Seerah [of the Prophet's Life]:

1 - People who will reject the message and stand against it whole-heartedly.

2 - People who know Islam is true, but they are not truly sincere:

a - a Hypocritewho is unaware of their own hypocrisy. But they did not have a good understanding of what they were getting involved with. They did not have full submission of 'we hear and obey', even though they were in the presence of Allah's Messenger (sal Allah alayhi wasalam.)

Especially if we keep in mind that everything Allah's Messenger said could not be doubted, could not be negotiated with, and it had to be fully submitted to. Allah's Messenger is a Law, a Constitution, who has to be dedicated to - his whole life by his companions. They cannot ask him to make changes for them, since he himself is saying that these are the commands of Allah, and not his own.

Those who could not make these changes and accept and submit totally were termed as Hypocrites/muNafiqeen.

b - the Major/Hypocrite who knows he is a Disbeliever:

These people only act as Muslims outwardly because;
i - they wanted Material benefit (i.e. spoils/wealth from wars etc.)
ii - they were Spies for other disbelievers.
etc.

However, Allah makes no distinction between the hypocrites in the Qur'an.
The punishment is more severe on hypocrites than even polytheists. Since hypocrites are in the lowest part of the hellfire.

aladheena kafaroo - those who disbelieved

waSaddOO.. - and THEY Obstruct (themselves and others)..

Abdur Rahman al Kilanee (in his book MutaRadafaat al Qur'an) said;

Sadd = to pull someone away from a mission with convincing and soft language.
I.e. Forcing them to become misguided did not work, so they used soft language and sweet talk to try to make them go astray from the path of Allah.

After disbelieving, these hypocrites and polytheists misled others from the path of Allah.

This shows that kufr/disbelief leads to Sadd/Obstructing others from the path of Allah.
SaddOO.. - and THEY Obstruct (themselves and others)..

If you know Prophet Muhammad and you disbelieve in him, then you will naturally stop others from the path of Allah because you will oppose his teachings and call others to that misguidance.

1 - aDalla - plansput to Waste (fully/totally in One go).

aDalla/yuDillu - can also mean 'to Misguide'.

All the disbelievers and hypocrites plan - to misguide people from the path of Allah - and Allah is putting all of their efforts to waste.

This is a proof that Islam will spread around the whole world, no matter how much the disbelievers and hypocrites try to plot and plan against it.

2 - aDalla - their good deedshave gone to waste.
3 - aDalla - Allah Misguided their efforts.

What they think is victory and success - they are actually being misguided so Allah can fulfill a purpose.

Indeed, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to avert [people] from the way of Allah . So they will spend it; then it will be for them a [source of] regret; then they will be overcome. And those who have disbelieved - unto Hell they will be gathered.[Anfal 8:36]

i.e. The disbelievers waste their money to fight against the believers, yet this wasting of wealth will weaken them, be a source of regret and they will not have achieved success. Rather, it will be a cause for the believers to become dominant in the end.

ash-Shawkani and Mujahid and others said;

Fee Sabeel illah - in the Path of Allah; is referring to the Quraysh blocking the believing people from worshipping at the Ka'bah.

In this surah Muhammad - Allah tells us that all their efforts will go to waste (and this is what happened in Badr - a clear cut victory.)

[This is different to the battle of Uhud - when Allah tells us;

لَن يَضُرُّوكُمْ إِلَّا أَذًى ۖthey wil not pain you except a Pinch/a little (surah aal Imran 3:111
- since Muslims did feel some distress in this battle.

aDalla - wasteD - this is a past tense statement.
It is in regard to future events too, but it is said in past tense because it is of a Surety - as Certain as the past itself.

Whatever efforts they have made and WILL make - will be 'aDalla' (go Fully to Waste).

Those who disbelieveD AND (WA) obstructed from the path of Allah..

Wa [bayaaniyyah] = hypocrites.
Wa [aTr] = disbelieving polytheists.

This surah is extremely strong and severe against the polytheists, but in comparison - less severe against the hypocrites.

Why? Because the hypocrites are not clear in their hypocrisy due to the Muslims' weakness in the early Madani/Medinan period. The greater theat is the polytheists - so more severity is against them.

However, as the Muslims get stronger in the later Madani period, the polytheists get weaker and the hypocrites become a greater threat. So surah Tawba is revealed, one of the harshest surahs against the hypocrites.

Ayah 2:

walladheena aamanoowa 'amilu-'saalihaatiwa aamanoo bimaa nuz-zila 'alaa Muhammadin wa huwwa-'l haqqu min Rabbihim. kaf-fara 'anhum sayyi'aatihim wa aSlaha baalahum

Andthose who believeand do righteous deeds and believe in what has been sent down upon Muhammad - and it is the truth from their Lord - He will remove from them their misdeeds and amend their condition.

aladheena aamanoo - those who believed.

these are 3 types of People:

1 - the Strongest believers (Mu'min)
2 - the Weak believer (Muslim who has not tasted the sweetness of Emaan.)

3 - the Hypocrite (muNafiq)
This is surprising. However, these people are dressed up with the cloth of Emaan (belief), although inside they are hypocrites.

The Hypocrites
they take their Oaths as a shield, then obstructed from the path of Allah. (surah al Munafiqoon 63:2)

What was their Oath? Their Oath was the Shahadah - the Testimony of Faith:
(Laa illaaha illAllah Muhammadun Rasool Allah - there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.)

Someone who declares the Testimony of faith - we have to accept that persons claim of faith without doubting it. That is our duty as Muslims.

TheYameen (plural aYmaan) - Oath that which they take to hide their hypocrisy is the declaration of the Shahadah [testimony of faith].

WhenAllah criticizes those who He addresses as;

yaa ayyuha-aladheena aamanoo - Oh you who believe..

He is mainly talking about the hypocrites who outwardly claim to believe, or those who have sickness in their hearts.

i.e. يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لِمَ تَقُولُونَ مَا لَا تَفْعَلُونَ - O you who believe, why do you say that which you do not do? (surah as-Saff 61:2)

Why is this done?
Allah protects the ummah, because none of the Muslims will not want to call each other Hypocrite/munafiq.

We can positively criticize peoples actions so they stop doing bad, but we cannot call them hypocrites.

As a means of the benefit of the doubt, we can say that a person is ignorant or for doing an error for some other reason.
This is called Husn Dhann (Good/positive Thinking) which we should have for all who claim to believe.

So when we correct someone, we correct their mistake, not the person.
True believers, hypocrites and weak believers are all included in this.

Weak Believers - Muslims
2 -aladheena aamaanooWA 'amilu as-saalihaat - Those who believeAND do good actions.

These are the weak believers - the Muslims. This is how we distinguish between the hypocrites and the weak believers.

'amilu as-saalihAAT(jam'u qilla - small amount of good deeds.)

Allah mentioned as-SaalihAAT; which means that Allah does not expect that we do an endless amount of good deeds. But He expects that we do some good deeds. This is an extreme Mercy from Him. This is covered through the word as-SaalihAAT.

It could have been Saalihaat (good deeds). But Allah says AL-saalihaat - THE good deeds.
This is implying that there arevery particular, good deeds are which Allah has legislated through His Messenger. We don't determine the morality based on our intellect alone, rather - our good is based on what Allah has legislated, even if we cannot comprehend it's wisdom.

Salaha - to reconcile and correct something negative into positive.

So what is being implied is that; a good deed replaces a bad deed.

If the Muslim did not do acceptable deeds, they would not be termed as 'amilu as-saalihaat' (good deeds).

Since they would not be termed as 'Saalihaat' (good). They would just be called 'Aml [actions].

If we see ayah 1 - those who disbelieve - 'Aml (actions) is only mentioned. Good is not mentioned next to it. Which shows it is the referring to the disbelievers.

3 - al Mu'minoon - Exclusively - the High Rank Believers.
Allah never criticizes these people. Rather, He only praises them;

Qad aFlaha al Mu'minoon - the Believers have already attained success (surah Mu'minoon 23:1).

Difference between Verb and Noun:
Verb:aladheena Aamanoo - a Temporary form - those who believe, but may not firmly be upon it's teachings.

Noun:Mu'minoon - a Constant form - Believers. Those who are Constant in faith.

When someone is described as a Verb in arabic, it is a Temporary form.

When someone is described as a Noun in arabic, it is a Constant form.

..aladheena aamanoo wa 'amilu as-saalihaat.. (those who believe and do good deeds = Muslims and Mu'min's)

..Wa aamanoo bi maa nuzzila 'alaa Muhammadin...

And they believe what has been sent down upon Muhammad (sal Allah alayhi wasalam)...

1 - To believe in Prophet Muhammad IS to believe in him AND do good deeds.

One cannot believe in Prophet Muhammad and not do good deeds.

What links Eman (belief) and righteous deeds is Risaalah [Prophethood].

ash-Shawkani and Aloosi:

The Ahl-ul Kitaab (the people of the Book - Jews and Christians) believed in the Oneness of Allah and did good deeds too.

However, Allah took it one step further - you have to believe in what was sent down to Prophet Muhammad (sal Allah alayhi wasalam) and follow his teachings of good.

He has taken knowledge of all good and all evil.

What Allah expects from us is do good according to the teachings He conveyed to His Messenger Muhammad (sal Allah alayhi wasalam.)

Why is this important?

Otherwise everyone will say that God spoke to them to tell them what is good and bad.
Some will lie, others may get shayateen (devils) come to them pretending to be gods etc.

The removal of the word 'Rasool' (Messenger) in this ayah has been explained earlier. By Allah just saying 'Muhammad' alone - you should know that he is Allah's Messenger who requires your full commitment and obedience.

The situation of the Ansaar [Helpers] of Medinah:

'Aws and Khazraj were the two tribes of the Ansaar (Helpers in Medinah) who were heavily indebted to the Jews due to warfare against each other in the times of Jahiliyyah (the times of Ignorance).

The Aws and Khazraj had only a few who were elite and wealthy, without debt, these were mainly the Hypocrites.

These Hypocrites would have to be involved in supporting the Muslim state through their wealth (because they pretended to be Muslims), including Prophet Muhammad (sal Allah alayhi wasalam).

This made the hypocrites feel superior to Prophet Muhammad, since they felt that he had emigrated to THEIR town. So they hated to obey him since he was an 'outsider' who was 'poorer' than them.

So Allah honored His Messenger by simply saying 'Muhammad' without saying Rasool (Messenger) or Naby (Prophet = one who speaks on behalf of [Allah]) next to his name.
Rather, the word 'Muhammad' is sufficient to confirm this.

The Messenger of Allah NEVER spoke on his own. He ALWAYS spoke as dictated by Allah.

He (Prophet Muhammad) does not speak of his own desire, it is only Wahy (Revelation) inspired to him. (Surah Najm 52: 3-4 )

When he speaks about matters of the Religion (Deen) - he is always speaking as Allah dictated him (sal Allah alayhi wasalam.)

The word Muhammad signifies in this ayah, his Personality.

Surah Muhammad

The surah -from its beginning- gets right into the heart of the matter.

Ayah 2 continued:

walladheena aamanoowa 'amilu-'saalihaatiwa aamanoo bimaa nuz-zila 'alaa Muhammadinwa huwwa-'l haqqu min Rabbihim.kaf-fara 'anhum sayyi'aatihimwa aSlaha baalahum

Andthose who believeand do righteous deeds and believe in what has been sent down upon Muhammad -and it is the truth from their Lord - He will remove from them their misdeedsand amend their conditions/hearts.

..wa huwwa al haqqu min Rabbihim...
and it is the truth from their Master..

This addresses a particular disease from the Hypocrites and some People of the Book - who hated the idea that one can only be saved in the next life if they believe in Prophet Muhammad.

So this ayah is speaking about those people who became Muslim or are about to become Muslim in he near future.

wa huwwa haqqu min Rabbihim - and is is the truth from their Master.
Truth against Falsehood is a common theme and there is no compromise by Allah in the Qur'an.Truth vs Falsehood:

Allah depicts an extremely visual image of truth against falsehood in the Qur'an;

We hurl the truth against falsehood (like a spear/arrow/rock), and the truth bashes its skull in. [Surah Anbiya 21:18]

So falsehood is trying to run away from the truth, while the truth is attacking because of its greater strength. Then the skull of falsehood is smashed (and that is the strongest bone in the body).

Similarly; the hypocrites and people of the Book would believe in part of the Revelation and reject other parts - yet truth and falsehood can never unite as one. So their falsehood was exposed.

And it is the truth from their Master..

This shows that truth and falsehood can never be mixed. You cannot believe in one aspect of the religion and reject another part.

min Rabbihim - from their Master.
This refers to ALL the people who have been mentioned earlier in the surah - the disbelievers, the hypocrites, the believers, and the people of the Book.

He (Prophet Muhammad) has come with the truth from THEIR Master.

al Aloosi and al Islahi
one of the Names of Allah is; al Haqq.
The word 'Reality' in arabic is 'Haqeeqah'.

Baatil and Butlaan [Falsehood] - by linguistically and by nature is something "False" and 'Weak'.
Falsehood relates to Weakness.

So by merely saying the word 'Falsehood'/Baatil - you are saying that this thing is 'Weak'.

So those who believehave the 'powerful Reality' Haqq with them from their Master. And those who disbelieve have Baatil - falsehood and weakness with them.
What happens to these people?

For the disbelievers (mentioned in ayah 1) - their deeds wereWasted (aDalla) as a consequence of their disbelief.

So what happens to those who believe in what was sent down to Prophet Muhammad?
He compensates for the believers in double, two things;

1 -Kaffara 'anhum sayyi'aatihim -

Kaffara - yukafiru/takfeer
(fa'ala / yufa'ila / taf'eel)

Kaf-fara - bury deep inside.Allah will bury far away from them - Sayyi'aatiHim - Their evil deeds.

Sayyi'a = things which are known to be clearly Bad and Harmful (to oneself and others).similar toDhulm an-Nafs [Wronging the Self].

Kaffara - to Bury sins.
Ghaffara - to Cover.

Wa aSlaha Baalahum - and fix their Situation.
Baal - Situation (everything you control)in Classical Arabic, Baal also meant 'Heart'.

SoAllah fixed their Situations and Hearts too, He took anger, shirk, greed and all evil out of their hearts.

Why was this mentioned in this part of the surah?

The believers being described are those who gave up all their wealth for Allah and His Messenger (sal Allah alayhi wasalam.) The Emigrants (Muhajiroon) and the Helpers (Ansaar).

It also shows that the hypocrites and disbelievers are wrong.
By being a true believer - Allah fixes all your Situations for you externally, aswell as fixing your Hearts and your inside. That is the True richness.

So people will see the believers and think that they have given up everything they have in life, but Allah is actually telling us that He has made all their internal Life and external Situations easy for them.

This ayah is like a Congratulations to those believers who emigrated for Allah's pleasure and those who helped them with their wealth and efforts.

Ayah 3:

dhaalika bi anna aladheena kafaroo atTaba'oo al Baatil wa in aladheena aamanoo atTaba'oo al Haqqu min Rabbihim. Ka dhaalika yaDribu-llahu lin-naasi aMthaalahum

That is because those whodisbelieve follow falsehood, and those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus does Allah present to the people their comparisons.
Dhaalik - That(verdict which the disbelievers and believers will get is because..)

Dhaalika bi anna aladheena kafaroo -That is because those who disbelieve..

it-Taba'a ul Baatil - follow falsehood.

Taba'a - Tabi'a - to Follow.But when in iFti'aal form; itTaba'a / it-Tabi'oo / yatTabi'oo) =to Follow Passionately and with Love.

itTaa'a - to Follow/obey.

ItTaba'a [mix of:itTaa'a(obedience) and HuB (love)] = to Follow and obey lovingly, behind the footsteps of someone.

AndThe believers have made it their lifetime ideology to lovingly follow the footsteps of the Truth of Prophet Muhammad.

Baatil [Falsehood is that which 'does not really exist'] is the Antonym/opposite of Haqq [Reality].

So the disbelievers have committed themselves to falsehood which is nothing - vain pride and actions which lead to nothing.

SoAllah is explaining now why the disbelievers' actions have gone to waste (aDalla). Because they were pursuing nothing [baatil=falsehood=nothing real]throughout their whole life!

The believers followed what was revealed to them lovingly, and they would follow it step by step (itTaba'a). When they followed this Reality (Haqq) - then they would be rewarded truly for the good steps they did take in life.

These words show that the believers are very anxious to follow the Truth that has been revealed to Muhammad (sal Allah alayhi wasalam).

The wording in this ayah will be really important in later ayaat of this surah. Why? Because the hypocrites did not follow the guidance lovingly, and they would claim that Prophet Muhammad only wants to fight for his own aspirations [benefit], and they would question why an ayah was not revealed to support his claim for fighting against the oppressing polytheists of Makkah.

The Hypocrites would argue; No Qur'an came down to order fighting, so why do we have to follow what Prophet Muhammad (sal Allah alayhi wasalam) says.

Then what they feared came true, aayaat/verses on fighting did come down from the skies.

..kadhaalika - just like that
yaDribullahu - Allah strikes
Lin-Naas- for Mankind.
aMthaalahum - their similarity/examples.

What do these aayaat Mean
?

1 - Anyone who reads these aayaat will have a good example of those who disbelieve and those who believe.

2 - Truth and Falsehood has clashed before, and falsehood has always had their deeds and efforts gone to waste.

3 - Through history - We (humans) will either identify ourselves as either supporters of the Sunnah (of Prophet Muhammad), or supporters of the ways of Abu Jahl (anti-Islam).

This will continue -conflict between believers and disbelievers/hypocrites- until the Last Hour. So we should be aware of who we are siding with and the consequences of that.

Ayah 4:

fa
idhalaqeetum aladheena kafaroo fa Darbar-Riqaabi hat-taa idha aThkhantumoo hum fa shadduw al wathaaqa fa immaamannan ba'du wa immaa fidaa'anhat-taa taDa'a al harbu aw zaarihaa. dhaalika wa law ya shaa'u Allahu la an taSara minhum wa laakin layabloo baDakum bi ba'D. walladheena qutiloo fee sabeeli-llahi fa lan yuDilla a'maalahum.

So
when you meet those who disbelieve [in battle], strike [their] necks until, when you have inflicted slaughter upon them, then secure their bonds, and either [confer] favor afterwards orransom [them] until the war placesdownits burdens. That [is the command]. And if Allah had willed, He could have taken vengeance upon them [Himself], but [He ordered armed struggle] to test some of you by means of others. And those who are killed in the cause of Allah - never will He waste their deeds.
The Context and Reason for Revelation:
After 12 years of persecution, the Muslims are being; tortured, expelled out of their own homes, and fleeing for their lives.

So Muslims have a right to defend themselves.

Keep in mind that the majority of the disbelievers did not even know what Islam is. Just like the majority of non Muslims do not know what Islam is today.

Most just hear propaganda against Islam by a select few media outlet people who have an agenda against Islam.

Yet when the sahaba/companions of Prophet Muhammad, and he himself would convey the amazing teachings of Islam to others, these people would be shocked at the amazing rights Islam gives to all people.

However, the elite who are against Islam fear to lose their authority which is based on injustice. So they torture and character-assassinate the believers to silence them.

Due to this - the Muslims flee to safety where they can follow the Sunnah and worship Allah without persecution.
Would these Muslims then have the right to defend and get their own properties back?

In the first battle in this Ummah (nation) - Badr, the Muslims were not commanded to fight. Rather, permission (idhn/"udhina") was given to them to fight back to get their wealth back - which the disbelievers had stolen from their properties when the Muslims emigrated/fled to Medinah.

This is why Muslims intended to raid the Caravan of the Quraysh, because it was their own wealth they were getting back!

However, when the Muslims in Medinah (the Ansaar/helpers) heard that they had to fight the superpower of Arabia - the Quraysh, many became terrified, except the strong believers.

No-one would fight the Quraysh. Not even the strong tribes of Arabia. Since they believed that Allah was on their side because they lookaftered His holy sanctity - the Ka'ba. Even Abraha's army of the Elephant was destroyed when he attempted to take down the Ka'ba. And there was no fear for Quraysh - where they could take whatever they wanted and nobody could/would do anything about it.
This is why no-one fought them.

Yet here the Muslims are; weak believers who fled from Makkah, with help from the Ansaar who are also in debt to the Jews of Medinah. Only a few of Medinah are actually warriors/fighters - many are just farmers.

Aayaat/verses are going to come down to order them to fight?

Nervousness settles in many peoples hearts. Yet others are willing.

This is the context in which ayah 4 comes down;

Ayah 4 Continued:

Fa - then
idhA - when (Future tense).

'In' [Alif, Nuun] (= If) could be used. However, this would be hypothetical i.e. 'if you meet the disbelievers in battle.'

By saying 'idha' - it means - For sure, when you meet them face to face in Battle.

LaQiYa - to Meet face to facein battle with the Enemy.

LaqeeyTum - you Face the enemy (past tense / MaaDiy). This past tense emphasises that this future event will Certainly happen as the past itself [i.e. there is nodoubt that the past happened, and there is no doubt that you will face the enemy].

(The aayaat that have come before this -in regard to this context- are in surah al Baqarah.)

..fa Darb ar-Riqaab...
fa - then
Darb ar-Riqaab - strike the neck (severely).[the above is a shortened statement of the Arab quote:
faDriboo darb ar-Riqaab - 'then strike a (severe) strike'].

The implication of shortening the statement has emphasised on even more Severity.

i.e.Then Strike their Necks [Riqab] (extremely Severely)!

So imagine these people who are farmers, some who are feeling fearful of the enemy. They are being told to attack the enemy severely on the necks.

Keep in mind that these people are indebted, they have a lack of swords/shields etc.

Raqaba - to tie someone's neck around.Raqb - back of the neck.

When you face the enemy - face to face, how can the back of their heads be striked severely?

The only way one can strike the back of the neck (Raqb) is if that person is on the floor facing downwards, or if they are turning their back to you and fleeing.

Allah is giving an image and prophecy of the polytheists fleeing in this battle of Badr - even before it has took place! (if the surah was revealed before the battle).

This is very stern language. It is instilling fire/confidence into the believers.

Allah is commanding the believers to be severe until the oppression ends. Especially on the battlefield.

These aayaat are specific to the battlefield. This means that outside of battle - Muslims should not be killing people. This is how the Salaf (predecessors) and scholars discussed these aayaat in Islamic history.

..hat-taa idha aThkhantumoohum... - until when you have aThkhana them:

aThkhana (if'aal) - yuThkhinu / iThkhinu / iThkaan - Lift something up and Estimate it's weight. I.e. You are in total control of that object.

aThkhana = kill indiscriminately. To be hard/tough/rigid and complete in killing until you cannot do it anymore. Your feelings cannot come in the way.

5 words used for 'kill' in the Qur'an:
Qatala - fight
aHlaka - violently destroy
Safaka
Hassa (letter seen)
aThkhana - completely / ruthlessly destroy.

After you have completelyaThkhana/annihialated them..

..Fa shuddu al Wathaaqa...
Shadda - tie a rope really really tightly.from Shadeed = Severe.

Wathaaq - literally a rope used to Tie animals.

So when you have killed many - Tie the prisoners you catch of them really tightly.
This is the first punishment Allah is inflicting on the Quraysh in the battle of Badr.
When the punishment falls on a people who oppose Allah's religion, and oppose His beloved Messenger - then the punishment to fall on them is NOT going to be nice.

When a student of the Qur'an does not understand why such severe language is used. It becomes clear why the language is so harsh when we study the context.

Lesson from Nouman - Battles' in the Prophet's Life:

When Allah sends a Messenger, there are believers and disbelievers.

When people disbelieve, the Messenger tries to call them to Islam more, yet these people persist on opposing the Messenger.

When the people disbelieve and persist on evil - Allah will destroy them totally with a painful punishment.

When the severe and painful punishment comes - it does not stop. It is too late to turn back.

Normally the punishment of Allah can be a powerful wind, a flood, a massive destruction, and in this Ummah [nation] - it is the hands of the believers who destroy the enemy.

Through the different battles - the Muslims' victory remind the disbelievers that you will gradually be destroyed by Allah - unless you repent and submit to Allah in Islam.

..fa immaa Mannan ba'du wa immaa Fadaa'an..- then it is either Favour after or it is Ransom..

Either you can
let them free (as a Mannan/favour)for no cost, or you take a Ransom (fidaa'an).

..hat-taa taDa'a -'l harbu aWzaaraha
until the war drops its weapons..
aWzaar - loads and Burdens.- Wizr is a weight which weighs down on you and is extremely stressful.
So the Loads could be Weapons, or Burdens could be the Stress of war.

Allah is telling us that War carries; Weapons, consequences which make it hard to live; economic catastrophe, family members dying etc.

This tough stance will have to remain on them so long as you treat them like an enemy until War drops its burdens/weapons.

War is being depicted as a Person:He is carrying his weapons and shield, and he will not stop until he drops his weapons/burdens.
When he drops them - that is when the war is over. Until this does not happen - this is your stance/foreign policy against the Enemy [severity and harshness].

Test for the Believers & Hypocrites
:

Believers
: This made a new challenge because these believers are being told to strike the necks of their brothers and fathers [from the polytheists] severely with full rage. People they may have loved and been friendly neighbours to in the past.

Hypocrites
: This was a strong test even for the Hypocrites because they would have to fight the Quraysh. And because of their weak faith - they were not sure if Prophet Muhammad would even survive these wars.
If we are severe against the enemy, what if Muhammad died? The Quraysh would still be our enemy and take revenge by killing us in the future. (this was the mindset of the hypocrites.)

This is the end of Episode 3 alHamdulillah. Tafseer will continue when next session is loaded insha' Allah.
